The Canterbury Pilgrims present ‘The
Tales Revisited’, the group have had some trials bringing the
show to Edinburgh. With only a matter of weeks the venue let them
down and they had to find a new home for their visit to the
fringe. Thankfully
The Zoo venue 124 came to the rescue.
I met some of the performers waiting to
see the cast after seeing ‘The Odd Couple’ and got talking. On
the strength of this conversation I went to see the show and was
so glad I did.
Topically set on an Underground Tube
Train trapped under a cave-in.
We see the actions and reactions of all 10 characters.
The piece is not only well written and directed but also
very well performed despite the constrictions of the performance
space.
Geoffrey Chaucer apparently meant to
write 29 tales in the original Canterbury Tales but only managed
12. What if he were writing these tales today? What sort of people
would he use? Alex Chua has written and directed his version of 10
of the missing ones. I particularly like a quote from his character ‘The
Writer’ “I try to write. Express. Write. Speak. Silent
speaking. Written words. They try to scream.”
