Donald Smith’s adaptation of Robert Louis
Stevenson’s novel is an entertaining, if somewhat speedy, romp
through one of Scotland’s great fictional stories. Actors Duncan R
Edwards as David Balfour and Gavin Paul as Alan Breck Stewart take
on the main roles as well as the other leading characters including
Ebenezer Balfour, David’s uncle, and in addition, a variety of
minor parts.
All the essential elements of the story are
depicted; Ebenezer Balfour tricking his nephew to board a ship and
be kidnapped; David Balfour’s meeting with Alan Breck Stewart
through to the unmasking of the villainous Ebenezer.
Both actors give strong portrayals of their
characters. Duncan R Edwards brings out the dour, honest qualities
of David Balfour, and Gavin Paul, the fierce loyalty of the Highland
clansman Alan Breck Stewart to Prince Charlie.
This production of a classic adventure
story should have a wide appeal to both young and old.
