The one man, or one woman, play reflecting
the life of a renowned, sometimes overlooked, figure from history
abounds at this year’s Fringe. When the subject has led a dramatic
existence, it can be fascinating. Although Sydney Graham (1918 –
1986) may be regarded as an original poet, his life story cannot be
regarded as being filled with momentous action.
Graham was brought up in Greenock but lived
and worked in rural Cornwall for most of his life in great poverty.
Kenneth Price’s portrayal of Graham is committed and his delivery
cannot be faulted. He draws upon the Graham’s poems and letters.
However, as theatre unless you are an admirer of Graham and his use
of language, this production may not attract. Certainly, it was a
tiny audience when I saw the show.
