There is no more epic story in Scotland’s
history than that of Robert the Bruce. If there is one historical
date that Scots remember, it must be 1314 and the Battle of
Bannockburn. Past Experience’s production tells Bruce’s story
truthfully and dramatically. Hero he was, but not without a violent
and scheming side to his character.
The story is told using a blend of three
elements – narration, theatre and music. Well known academic Dr
Fiona Watson is clear and concise in her narration. She also reveals
a gentle wit. The actors, Tomm Cody as Bruce along with Stuart
Hepburn and Carolyn Konrad, who both play a variety of parts, bring
to life key historical moments. The singers, David Whitton and
Carolyn Konrad backed by Nick Hanley (guitar) and Louise Hunter
(violin), provide the feeling for the period. And what a setting for
providing atmosphere – Greyfriars Kirk with its age and space is
ideal.
The success of this production is to reveal
Bruce the man – patriot, visionary, bold, resourceful but also
ruthlessly ambitious. An enthralling experience, but only on for
three nights!
