Going Underground is a seven hand play that
is allegedly set on the London Central line and in essence are seven
slightly dysfunctional travellers who each relate their stories in
slices. Dottie, a perennial traveller with a thing for the Wizard of
Oz, businessman George, Aussie Sebastian with a secret, Faith with
social problems and is in therapy, Tina a job seeker with an
oppressive mother, Simon, an office worker with a letters to
newspaper ethic and Jose, a Latin struggling to learn English. In
addition there are three non-speaking roles as passengers who add
little or no value.
This amateur group perform this uninspiring
play to the best of their abilities I’m sure, but I would have to
question the staging and direction at times.
I’m not sure what message was trying to
be delivered, but I’m afraid it did not reach me and I have to
question why do such a lacklustre piece in the first place.
