The Wedding
Director Wojtek Smarzowski | Poland | 2004 | 109 mins
The idea of a disastrous wedding as the subject for humour is not a new one. This Polish interpretation paints a dark picture as well as having its amusing moments.
Really the film is about the father's inability to manage his financial dealings which come to a head during the wedding reception. In particular, the sale of land to a gang of local villains leads to vicious threats if he can't finalise the deal by the end of the day. Around this violent theme several sub-plots are developed during the course of the wedding reception. Marian Driedziel holds the central attention with a fine performance as the bride's father whose whole life is fast disintegrating in the space of one day.
Clever direction from Wojtek Smarzowski to draw the various strands together to provide a devasting, optimistic and funny ending.
