Popular Music is a comedy drama set in
the far north of Sweden in the 1960's. Two boys,aged about 8 years
old, bacome childhood friends. Matti comes from a happy and loving
family, whereas Niila has a violent and abusive father.
By chance, they discover rock and roll
music, and this transforms their lives.
We next see the boys in their mid-teens,
and sex and drink now figure. Thanks to an eccentric music
teacher, the boys realise their dream and form a rock band. A
whole host of characters appear in the and full credit must
go to Director Reza Bagher for making sense of it all. There are
many hilarious moments as the story unfolds, both in the dialogue and
visually. Nevertheless, the underlying theme of escaping from a
claustrophobic existence fully emerges as the film reaches its
conclusion.
Strong performances from all the cast and
an absorbing story ensure an enjoyable experience.
