Northampton shoe factory teams up with
London drag queen to produce triumph over adversity. Marking the
impressive film debut of Director Julian Jarrold, Kinky Boots is
in the warm, feel-good genre of film - witty with enough edge to
prevent it from sliding into over sentimentality.
Charlie Price (Joel Edgerton) inherits,
unwillingly at first, his father's shoe factory. A chance
encounter with Lola a drag queen (Chiewetal Ejiofor) provides him
with the inspiration to manufacture boots for trans-sexuals. His
first attempt is futile, having the required strength but unsexy.
Success only comes when he persuades Lola to come to Northampton
to design the boots, The dialogue is sharp and raunchy. Charlie in
a rallying to a dubious workforce declares that they are not
simply making boots but two and a half feet of tubular sex.
Strong performances from the cast, but Ejiofor
steals the limelight as a convincing drag artist. Despite a
certain predictability, it is a beautifully constructed film
visually and highly entertaining.
