I first caught State of Matter briefly last
year at the press launch for the Zoo venue.
Even on a tiny stage in the corner of a room they managed to
thoroughly impress. Unfortunately
my dance card was full last year so I was eager to see them in
action at this year’s Fringe.
2008 sees them make the move to the Udderbelly and the big
purple cow thoroughly vibrates at the sound of their presence.
This show is a beautiful and invigorating
showcase of physical performance; various abstract stories being
told through a fusion of lights, music, expression and, most
importantly, dance. These
boys can move with grace and elegance as well as bound across the
stage performing astounding acrobatics.
The mood of the show shifts along with the tempo of the
music, but all throughout the audience are utterly captivated.
And you absolutely have to pay attention because at times
there’s so much going it’s hard to take it all in.
Believe me if you aren’t clapping and stomping by the
finale then report your soul AWOL.
This is a company able to open up the world
of dance to people who perhaps might not have sat through such a
show before. Appreciation
of this performance was shown through a standing ovation and I’m
sure this is an action which will be repeated daily.
