A
handsome prince sleeps on his throne whilst a young maiden dances
round teasing him. She presents him with apples, which he eats, not
noticing she is hurt with each bite. Eventually he gets the message
he needs to travel to a great river where she needs water. At the
river we meet a witch, she destroys the maiden and places the prince
under her spell but as with all good fairy stories it all ends well.
Yet
not one word is spoken! The use of mood music and physical gestures
tell the story. The only stage setting is the very sturdy throne,
which is utilised in so many different ways it is truly magnificent.
Beautifully performed with every step of the story so clear it could
have had a subliminal narration continuing all the time.
It
was just before the performance I discovered the performers are all deaf
and my admiration for the show I had just seen was magnified. I felt
fortunate in that I have seen one or two comedians who invite deaf
audiences to their shows during which they provide an interpreter
and it was at one of Adam Hills shows I learned that to show
appreciation as a deaf person you put both arms in the air and do
jazz hands.
This
is a great show for both children and adults beautifully thought out
and superbly performed.
