Typical
you wait years to see RENT and then three come along in 3 months, two
productions in August and now Youth Music Theatre Scotland’s
production at the Alhambra Theatre in Dunfermline.
YMTS work with young people aged 5 – 19, Rent
utilises the talents of the older youths gathered from the four corners
of Fife and Stirling. With just 12 days for rehearsal the team set
themselves some challenge and the resulting production is on at the
Alhambra Theatre Dunfermline Fife.
Fraser Morrison as Mark Cohen has the
un-enviable task of being the pivotal character around which the action
centres. He has a good voice and his performance belies his age.
Daniel
Paton as Roger Davis has the looks of a ‘Rock Star’ and again a
reasonable voice to go with it. He is also a perfect foil for Alex Horan
as Mimi Marquez, his drug addicted teenage love interest.
Cailean Wilson as Tom Collins and Connor
Cummings as Angel Dumont Schunard certainly work well together as the
ideal couple whose love is cut short by disease.
Alex Gold as Joanne Jefferson and Gemma
O’Sullivan as Maureen Johnson are the feisty performer and her female
manager.
With Craig Methven as Benjamin Coffin III
benefactor and enemy of Avenue A. Other cast members are Naomi McGowan,
Rhian Campbell, Sophie Paton, Lauren-John Cleave, Heather Scott, Rebecca
Campbell, Megan MacAuley, Finlay Copland and Nikki Johnstone.
Some of the most memorable scenes are
‘Rent!’, ‘Support Group’, ‘La Vie Boheme’, ‘Without You’
and ‘Seasons of Love’. This is a difficult show to perform but YMTS
have managed to present the show sensitively with one or two lovely
unique touches of their own. Only on for three performances those who
get to see it may be seeing some of the first performances of some of
the future stars of the theatre.
This production further endorses the
Alhambra’s commitment to promoting as many forms of theatrical
performances whether amateur or professional. www.alhambradunfermline.com
