I
have been to see several Middle Ground Theatre productions and each one
has been of superb quality with
highly
regarded performers, good scripts, tight direction and cleverly designed
substantial sets. It was with interest that I went to Dundee Repertory
Theatre to see their production of ‘Billy Liar’.
I have only ever seen this performed as a musical and although
based on the same book is substantially different.
Billy
Fisher (Nathan Hannan) lives with his mum (Helen Fraser), dad (Dicken
Ashworth) and grandmother (Sally Sanders) well that is the reality,
Billy’s versions change weekly. His life revolves round his boring job
and his very vivid imagination. Even
best friend Arthur is not quite sure what is truth and what lies. Just
to add a little spice Billy is engaged to Barbara (Lauren Drummond) at
the same time as to Rita (Victoria Hawkins) even using the same
engagement ring. Not to complicate things further Billy is really in
love with Liz (Holly Quin-Ankrah) and Arthur is seeing Rita. Confused?
Well you should be.
Watching
the show makes things a little clearer with the clever use of lighting
changes and added sound effects every time Billy goes off into his
imaginary existence. The inventive direction and good acting leave you
in no doubt as to the thoughts going through Billy’s head. Michael
Lunney has done his usual superb job as director, designer and producer.
The touring company is completed by James Morley, Janey Lawson, Marc
Antolin and Judith Street as understudies and ASM’s. With Mat Larkin
production manager, responsible for music and sound effects and Jeremy
Barnaby as the technical stage manager.
I
look forward to my next Middle Ground Theatre Company production for
