With
more and more female
stand-ups coming to the fore, it seems only right that the Stand Comedy
Club, both in Edinburgh and Glasgow, are continuing to showcase their
undoubted talents on a ‘girls only’ night monthly, and it is usually
a night well worth attending with this latest offering no exception to
the norm.
Compere
Susan Calman as usual got the show of to a fine start. Over the last two
years the diminutive Glaswegian has really come on leaps and bounds in
our opinion. She has a wicked line in patter and no matter how often we
have seen her, the material is always different. As all-good comperes do
she warmed up the predominately female audience well, and setting the
tone for the rest to follow.
The
first act was newcomer to us anyway Sonja Kelly. After the first couple
of minutes when she seemed a little nervous, Ms Kelly soon settled into
her surroundings and it wasn’t long before she had her audience with
her. The rapidly delivered material was good, the Irish brogue appealing
and she has wonderful comic timing. Her set was over all too soon for
most, and I really look forward to seeing her again before too long.
Stand
stalwart and award-winning author Alison Kennedy was the second act. We
have seen her numerous times over the last couple of years and never
fail to be amazed that each time she has a different set. As usual she
flows through her time with ease delivering her funny material in her
own often self-deprecating style and caused convulsions of laughter as
she went.
Top
of the bill was Tanyalee Davis. What she lacks in inches, she is only
3ft 6 inches tall, this lady makes up for in comedy talent. Described as
the Ferrari of comedy as she is low to the ground and racy, this
Canadian born Las Vegas living dynamo of energy captivated her audience
from the onset. She goes places with her humour that only she could, and
it was no surprise to me that she got rave reviews for her first
one-woman show during the Edinburgh Fringe 2007 if this was an example
of what was on offer then. It was a pleasure to witness her performance
and I look forward to her return to these shores, hopefully in the near
future.
There
we have it another excellent night at the Stand, and judging by what’s
on offer on their programme just one of many. You can check out the
line-ups on their website www.thestand.co.uk
both for Edinburgh and Glasgow and given that The Magners Glasgow Comedy
Festival is in March the acts on the bill are even more stellar than
normal, certainly well worth checking out.
