It
was Thin Lizzy way back in the annals of time who had a major hit with
‘The Boys are Back in Town’ however, it was Kirkcaldy on Saturday
night that had the updated version, when ‘The Bhoy was Back in
Town’, but it was as much of a smash hit as the song.
For what was the final gig on the British leg
of his world tour, a tour that started back in February in Australia,
one of Scotland’s finest examples of Stand-up comedian wowed the
audience for over an hour and a half as only he can.
Starting with a VT of our star ‘extolling’
the virtues of Scotland, which warmed up the audience nicely for the
fairly laid back, yet exceptionally funny material that was to follow.
Bhoy does not really tell jokes; he relates
stories and funny events that have happened to him on his globe trotting
over the last few years. The situations usually have him as the butt of
the story, precious and pretentious do not seem to be words in his
vocabulary, but what he does have in his repertoire is a keen
observational sense of humour and ability to gather up his audience and
transport them with him on his journey.
As with many of his peers occasionally he gets
sidetracked into a different story part way through what he was
originally saying, but usually returns to finish them later. I say
usually, ‘cause we never did get to hear about his Glasgow Airport
protest due to the fact that he ran out of time, even though he was way
over his scheduled finishing hour, but hey ho, maybe we’ll get to hear
it on next year’s tour.
I have been following his career for a number
of years now since first seeing him compere a gig during the Fringe, it
must have been nearly ten years ago now, and since then both Sheila and
I have become big fans. We always make a point of catching him perform
whenever possible and
have even seen him perform live at The Royal Variety Performance when it
visited Edinburgh too.
Danny starts the six-week Canadian leg of his
tour early next week so it maybe some time before he is back in the
area. However, if you do get a chance to see him grab a ticket with both
hands.
All the information of his gigs and other news
can be found on his website www.dannybhoy.com
so check it out.
