North Sea Gas

Dalgety Bay Folk Club was formed in 1999 and one of the first bands I remember seeing perform was North Sea Gas way back when the club met in the local sailing club.
The setting is now different, the Woodside Hotel in neighbouring Aberdour, and NSG have a rather different line-up, only founder Davie Gilfillan remaining, but what has not changed is that the early gig was a sell-out, and last night’s performance was as well, such is the drawing power of this long lasting band, they have been playing in various guises for more than 30 years and the friendly atmosphere that is generated by Dalgety Bay Folk Club.
The current line up consists of Dave Gilfillan, guitar, banjo and bodhran, Ronnie ‘Mack’ MacDonald, guitar and bouzouki, and Grant Simpson on fiddle with occasional forays with guitar and mandola and all three share lead  vocals and sometimes their three part harmonies are an absolute delight.
The musical repertoire is always varied from these seasoned pros, but the set as performed on Friday was largely drawn from their latest album entitled ‘Edinburgh Toon’, slightly less well known material to the crowd than usual, but quality performances as per the norm. The material is drawn from vast eclectic origins, and is the mixture of instrumentals and vocal numbers that are drawn from their constant touring with song from the USA, Europe and of course their native Scotland, was generally well received.
There were also a few well known traditional songs sprinkled throughout both halves of their two hour sets which gave opportunities for the punters to join in with a sing song, perhaps, for me anyway, there could have been a few more of these especially after a few pints have lubricated the vocal chords, but this didn’t detract from a thoroughly professional and enjoyable gig.
Very shortly North Sea Gas are off to the States once more for yet another tour, but you can check out their website www.northseagas.co.uk for their future gigs or to purchase any of their numerous albums, and also check out www.dalgetybayfolkclub.co.uk for their list of forth coming gigs.
