Shazia
Mirza is almost unique in the fact that she is a female Moslem
stand-up comedian and her show this year is built on and around
that she is trapped between two worlds.
Her
ethnic community do not approve of how she chooses to make a
living because it is somewhat contrary to their traditions and
upbringing, and that she attracts middle class white audiences.
She
is not a belly laugh comedian, but I thoroughly enjoyed her show.
It was an education to me and I suspect most of her 'typical'
audience the amount of, to us anyway, prejudice she encounters
from well educated people within her community for daring to
marginally deviate from the perceived norm of acceptable behavior.
I
would really have liked to talk to her afterwards and asked a
number of questions that were generated by her show.
She
is certainly entertaining and funny and is someone I would enjoy
seeing again.
