After a few years in the doldrums someone
seems to have found a rich vein of comedians in Wales, Rob Brydon,
Mark Watson for example, and for me the best of them all Rhod
Gilbert.
I have followed his progress over the last
few years and have to say he is one of the best on the circuit as
far as I am concerned and the bursting at the seems Pleasance
Cabaret Bar seem to agree with me.
Gilbert owns his room from the onset with
some local and topical gags before settling into his show about the
title of his show a real story if you are to believe the man accused
of always making things up.
He has the ability to play to the excess of
100 people but still make it feel you’re are having a chat with
him over a pint, and a whole lot of excellent material and anecdotes
that keep the enthusiastic crowd doubled up with laughter around
such topics, as torches, welsh valley social clubs, motorway service stations, age
gaps in partnerships, corporate awards and of course mince pies.
Gilbert is great value for his money, far
more laughs per minute than a lot of alternatives and he comes
across as a nice guy to boot.
I for one would forget award winning mice
pies, and think it’s about time we had an award winning Welsh
comedian IF anyone is listening.
