Having watched Paul Merton’s BBC4 series
on his knowledge and love of silent comedy films, I was looking
forward to spending the afternoon in his company viewing short film
clips.
Neil Brand played the piano whilst Paul
interjected between clips about each film’s background, and the
history of the silent film industry/ film stars. Clips included
starred Charlie Chaplin, Laurel and Hardy, Snoop Pillard, ending on
the full length Buster Keaton “Sherlock Jnr”
It was great to see Paul’s enthuasism and
joy about each clip and watching them, including Paul’s own The
Suicide Dog, added to my existing love of silent films especially of
Charlie Chaplin/ Laurel and Hardy.
The
audience ranged from 10 years to over 60 years old. I hope that if
some of the audience had came along to see Paul only, that the clips
may have inspired them to see and know more.
