The use of the word ‘pet’ in Mark
Allen’s amusing show is highly apt. It is about pets, proper ones
like dogs and cats not goldfish or hamsters, and in carrying out his
research he became obsessed by his interest in pets and their
owners, including himself. His show could be described as a
presentation since he uses slides and film footage as illustrations.
One of his lines of inquiry led him to
discover the Furries, a group of people who like to dress up in
animal costumes. They contact each other over the internet and meet
up for conventions. Film footage of him dressed up as a dalmation at
a convention is hilarious.
He has an easy, conversational style with a
wry sense of humour. Concentrating on a single topic does appear
limiting but he has more than enough good material to sustain the
humour for the entire hour.
