For someone who has been nominated for the
Perrier Newcomer Award and won The Hackney Empire New Act of the
Year, Mr
Toulson is self deprecating in the extreme.
He is a very funny man in my opinion but
chooses to mention his unexpected Perrier nomination, a preview gig
for four….and the fact that three left half way through!!
Being a former school teacher obviously
gives him latitude to relate some stories of his time there,
relationships, arguments, dyslexia and Ryan Air are just a few of
the other topics for him to wax lyrical on.
Toulson is generous in that he recommends a
few other peoples shows part way through his set and offers the
audience the chance to recommend others, not everyone is as selfless
as that.
The switch for the remainder of the set
sees him tackling a locally based audience member to a ‘Scot
Off’. The rules behind this are that he and the selected person
have three rounds to do impressions in Scottish accent, which he
accepts he is unlikely to win, but gives it a go to much hilarity.
He also explains the reason that he and his like keep returning to
Edinburgh, even if it costs them thousands each year. Seems a good
reason to me!!!
This was a thoroughly enjoyable hour and
hopefully he’ll be returning for years to come.
