I love the film Grease.
As a girl born after 1978 this should come as no surprise.
Watching the films repeatedly, memorising both dialogue and
lyrics, is almost a natural stage of female development.
At least that was certainly the case with myself and my
friends. Therefore a
visit to see the Grease Lightnin’ Drag Show was an absolute must.
I wanted to see Grease with a twist.
And what I saw was fantastically twisted.
Versions of Sandy, Danny, Rizzo, Kenickie and Frenchie
appeared on stage which were unlike any I’ve ever encountered
before. The performers
mime along to dialogue from the show, which is a nice idea although
at times I found the sound slightly distorted.
Throughout these sections expect both double and single
entendres which poke affectionate fun at familiar scenes from the
film. The show is
pepped up by fabulous musical numbers which include most of the
favourites as well as music from outwith the film.
I was slightly disappointed at the exclusion of ‘Sandra
Dee’ as it’s my personal favourite but the sheer number of songs
which are included will make your head spin.
As you would expect the costumes on show
are simply spectacular. In
fact, at some points they threaten to upstage the performers wearing
them. The whole show is
a sing-along sensation and the audience I was part of were more than
up for joining in. Grab
a group of friends, get yourself along and have a good time.
